Before the first lesson

The grade on the form is a guess. The placement check is not.

Children are rarely at one level across every subject. A child can be reading two years ahead and still counting on their fingers. Every subject starts with a short check, and the lessons begin where the answer says.

The result is the grade the lessons should be built from, plus the strands that came out weakest.

How it teaches

Every lesson is built the way good teaching already works.

None of this is new. It is what careful teachers have always done, and what decades of classroom research keeps arriving back at. The difference is that it is built into every lesson rather than depending on someone remembering to do it.

She handles it before she reads about it

A lesson on hundreds and tens starts with blocks she taps together to build the number, not a paragraph describing blocks. The idea arrives in her hands first and the words explain what she has already done.

The work tells her when she is right

The blocks add up or they do not. The bar is shaded correctly or it is not. She finds out from the material itself, without waiting for you to look over and confirm it, which is what builds the confidence to try again.

One idea on the screen at a time

Lessons arrive in short pieces she taps through at her own speed, rather than a page she has to face all at once. Nothing decorative is added around them, because anything competing for her attention is taking it from the lesson.

Starting with what she already knows

Every lesson opens with two or three questions about work she has done before. Pulling something back out of memory is what makes it stick, far more than reading it again, and nothing about the warm-up is scored.

Difficulty aimed at mostly right

Questions are pitched so a child who has read the lesson gets around eight out of ten. Work she fails teaches her nothing; work she breezes through teaches her nothing either. The interesting part is the two.

Getting it wrong costs nothing

There is no red, no letter grade and no failure screen. A wrong answer gets an explanation and another go, because a child who is worried about being wrong stops trying things.

Where it comes from

The hands-first sequence and the idea that a child should be able to check her own work are Montessori-inspired. The daily warm-up, the worked examples and aiming for mostly-right come from Barak Rosenshine’s summary of what effective teachers have in common. Short sections at the learner’s own pace, and the refusal to decorate a lesson, follow Richard Mayer’s work on how people learn from a screen. How much reading a lesson holds is set by published reading-rate norms for the grade rather than by guesswork.

Starts where your child is

The placement check sets the starting point subject by subject, and every lesson records the diagnostic that shaped it.

One idea at a time

Short sections revealed at your child’s pace rather than a wall of text, each readable aloud with the words highlighted as they are spoken.

Things to actually handle

Number blocks to build with, number lines to step along, fraction bars to shade. Mathematics starts with something countable before it becomes a symbol.

Warm-up before new work

Every lesson opens with recall questions on what came before. Your child checks the answers herself and nothing is scored.

Checked as she works

Practice questions can be checked one at a time with an explanation straight away, so a misunderstanding does not run through the whole set.

A record that holds up

Every lesson, score, topic and minute on task stored against the curriculum expectation it covers.

Beyond the core subjects

The things a child needs that a worksheet has never taught.

Reading and arithmetic are the floor, not the ceiling. These five sit alongside the core subjects with the same structure, the same sequencing and the same record, because they are not enrichment.

Emotional Intelligence

Taught in sequence rather than as one topic: noticing what you feel, managing it, recognising it in someone else, then using all three to work a problem out. A child who cannot name frustration cannot get past it.

Entrepreneurship & Innovation

Spotting a problem worth solving, testing an idea cheaply, and being wrong without it being a disaster. The habits underneath, not a lesson about starting a business.

AI Literacy

What these systems actually do, where they are confidently wrong, and what it means when one is trained on data about people. Taught plainly, because a child who cannot name the technology cannot question it.

Digital Citizenship

What a footprint is and how long it lasts, how to tell manipulation from persuasion, what to do when something online goes wrong, and who to tell.

Critical Thinking

Separating a claim from the evidence for it, noticing what a source stands to gain, and holding a question open long enough to answer it properly.
